چکیده

We compare observations of the eclipsing binary system CM Draconis (hereafter CM Dra) with synthetic spectra computed using the stellar atmosphere code PHOENIX. High-resolution infrared spectroscopic observations of six 0.05-mm-wide regions between 1.51 and 2.45mm, combined with previous work, particularly CM Dra’s accurately known surface gravity, enable us to estimate its metallicity using detailed spectral synthesis. We find significant discrepancies between the observed and synthetic spectra throughout most of the region emphasizing the need for higher quality atomic data in the infrared. Nevertheless, the Dn 1⁄4 2 CO bands beyond 2.3mm seem to be well modelled and metal-sensitive, and thus highresolution spectra should be a most powerful diagnostic tool for spectroscopic analyses for M dwarfs and brown dwarfs. The CO bands indicate a metallicity of around 21 dex for CM Dra. This result is supported by observations of two M dwarfs of similar spectral type, GJ 699 (Barnard’s star) and GJ 725B. This result supports inferences from previous infrared work, although it does not agree with standard evolutionary models or optical analyses, which both suggest an abundance for CM Dra close to that of the Sun.

Letter to the Editor A search for Jovian-mass planets around CM Draconis using eclipse minima timing

For the eclipsing binary system CM Draconis, eclipse minimum times have been monitored with high precision between 1994 and 1999. Periodic deviations of minimum times from a linear ephemeris may indicate the presence of an orbiting third body. Individual measurements of 41 eclipse minimum times result in a standard deviation from linear ephemeris of 5.74 seconds. A power spectral analysis of th...

From CM Draconis to the Crowded Field BW3: Aspects of the Search for Extrasolar Planets Around Small Eclipsing Binaries

We review some apsects of the search for extrasolar planets around small-mass short-period eclipsing binaries, including lessons from the extensive search around CM Draconis (over 1,000 hours), and the extention of the search to small eclipsing binaries in the crowded field Baade’s Window 3 (BW3) in the Galactic plane. In addition to being of intrinsic interest to planet formation studies, due ...

Fingerprint analysis of Resina Draconis by ultra-performance liquid chromatography

BACKGROUND Resina Draconis, a bright red resin derived from Dracaena cochinchinensis, is a traditional medicine used in China. To improve its quality control approach, an ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) fingerprint method was developed for rapidly evaluating the quality of Resina Draconis. METHODS The precision, repeatability and stability of the proposed UPLC method were valid...

Binary Formation in Star-Forming Clouds with Various Metallicities

Cloud evolution for various metallicities is investigated by three-dimensional nested grid simulations, in which the initial ratio of rotational to gravitational energy of the host cloud β0 (= 10 –10) and cloud metallicity Z (= 0–Z⊙) are parameters. Starting from a central number density of nc = 10 4 cm, cloud evolution for 48 models is calculated until the protostar is formed (nc ≃ 10 23 cm) o...
